I was just wondering how the basis comes off? This in reference to going into a building or stopping for lunch, so forth. You wouldn't want to walk off the snow into a building, so do the bottoms just clip out or do You need tools?

F3.01 BaseThe bases are fixed to the boot, and are only meant to be replaced when they are worn out (which normally takes 3-5 years or more). They can be replaced, you need a screwdriver + bolts (4 bolts/screws from the inside of the boot).

You have the following options as I see it on the slopes when You want to go in somewhere;

  • Walk inside with the Sled Dogs as they are.
  • Have shoes in a bag at the bottom of the slope.
  • Use Gore-Tex socks or similar, and walk inside in those.
  • Use Doggie walkers (see next point of FAQ).

I personally always have my shoes lying in a bag close to the start of the lift. I also always have a pair of Gore-Tex socks in my Sled Dogs backpack (seldom use them though, since I usually just walk into buildings with my Sled Dogs on).

Normally I just walk straight into buildings with the Sled Dogs on. The only times I do NOT do this is either if there is much sand/pebbles on the floor of the place (or the stairs), or if it is EXTREMELY cold outside (approx -10 degrees Celsius or colder) ...since You then will get an ICE-layer on the base the instant You walk outside again. In these cases I walk inside on my Gore-Tex socks or my shoes if they are close by, and carry my Sled Dogs with me inside. I wipe/dry  the bases with a tissue/paper before stepping outside again, so that they are dry when I get outside in the cold to avoid to get that "ice layer" on the base/ski (this is only a problem if it is REALLY cold though!)

Do you have any plans to either make the "Doggie Walkers" (they were little rubber covers for the bases/skis so you could walk on pavements, inside buildings, so forth with skates on) or removable base skates?

Dana Holmes, USA

We do not have them at the moment. We were not totally happy with the last model and want to have it correct before we re-launch the doggie walkers. We are currently testing and believe we will have a product for the market in season 2009/2010.

Is it possible to wax the Sled Dogs (like skis/snowboards) for more speed?
Bjørn Erik Schou, NORWAY

Sure! Wax that works for skis/snowboards will work with Sled Dogs also.

If the temperature is between -10 and -2 degrees Celsius you might as well drop waxing, since the Sled Dogs perform really well in this temperature range (you will get a slightly better glide with waxing at this temperature also, but the difference will not be large enough for most people to notice).

If the temprature is -2 degrees Celcius or WARMER, You can use the worlds cheapest wax, CANDLES! Yupp, just rubb a regular candle (preferably one without coloring, since they are normally better) against the bases, and You'll get an EXCELLENT performance improvement! First time You'll try this You'll be AMAZED of the effect! Keep an candle in Your jacket pocket, and rub the bases once every hour or so (after You have done it 2-3 times, You do not need to do it so often, since the bases holds the wax/stearin better after a couple of retries).

If the temprature is approx -10 degrees Celsius or COLDER, use regular snowboard/skii wax. I prefer the types that comes as an paste, which You just rub into the base, let dry for 2-3 minutes, and rub of with paper/tissue.This wax will hold for a couple of hours, to the whole day (depending on the snowconditions).

It is also possible to use hard carbon waxes (the ones used by professional downhill alpinists), but these must be melted to the base with an regular iron (be warned if You use Your iron for waxing...DON'T use it for Your shirts/suit after that). It is a bit more work, but lasts longer. ...but only nutcases like Rune Ingebrigtsen and myself is willing to that kind of work for "that teeny-weeny extra speed"! NORMAL people sticks to candles or no waxing at all!
